Assignment

Containment Solutions within a live food manufacturing plant.

Project Overview:

Workshop Enclosure

To design, construct and deconstruct a 900m³ clean room environment with air extraction to provide a workshop enclosure for operatives to build a new conveyor system within a live food manufacturing environment.

Containment Barrier

To design, construct and deconstruct a 65 linear metre x 5m high sealed barrier system within a live food manufacturing environment to prevent cross contamination from airborne particles during the installation phase of the new conveyor systems.

Figure 2. Containment Barrier

Devised Method

Scaffold structures enveloped with heavy duty shrink wrap membrane.

Project Challenges:

  • Construction of the temporary clean room facilities within a live food manufacturing environment.
  • To completely seal temporary structures preventing airborne particles from entering food manufacturing operation.
  • Deconstruction and removal of the temporary clean room facilities within a live food manufacturing environment.

Project Solutions:

  • Shutdown of food manufacturing operation for 36 hour window over holiday weekend.
  • Screw jacks fitted into top and bottom of open ended standards with 130 linear metres of 150mmx 50mm sole boards attached to base plates of screw jacks.
  • The shrink wrap membrane was slipped in between sole boards at floor and ceiling levels clamping the membrane in a vice like system.
  • The shrink wrap was then heated to tension the wrap. End result was a temporary wall with a perfect seal.
  • Workshop enclosure was enveloped in the shrink wrap membrane and clamped only at floor level.
  • Zipped curtains provided sealed access-egress when entering and exiting enclosure.
  • Air extraction provided low negative pressure within enclosure.

Project Conclusion

Time given to design and in-depth planning with the client due to the restraints and specification of the project proved invaluable for the installation work which needed to be carried out with military precision.
